Heel Pain? Matching The Treatment With The Cause.

Many people suffer from heel pain. We don’t realize how much we rely on our feet until each step gives us a painful reminder. There are many causes of heel pain including: Plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinitis, calcaneal stress fractures, bone cysts, and systemic arthritis, to name a few. It is important to have a thorough examination to determine the cause of the pain.

A thorough work up of heel pain includes:

  • Complete history of the current pain including what makes it better and worse, and treatments performed thus far.
  • Physical exam evaluating all structures that may be effected.
  • Imaging: initially includes X-ray as well as diagnostic ultrasound. May require MRI or CT in some instances.
  • Occasionally lab work is necessary.

Heel Pain

Once the reason for the pain is found, appropriate treatment can be applied which varies widely depending on the diagnosis. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. Treatment may include a variety of options including stretching, icing, rest, Ibuprofen, steroid injections or custom orthotics. If the pain is due to a bone cyst then the treatments above may not help, requiring completely different treatment, highlighting the need for an appropriate diagnosis.
